Scarborough is packed with restaurants. But how do you sort the good from the bad? Eating out can be a minefield, particularly when you don’t know the area and are only visiting for a short time. Here are five outstanding local restaurants, which have consistently delighted our guests, and where you can guarantee you will be offered a warm welcome.

CoGoni’s Ristorante Italiano

36 North Marine Road, Scarborough YO12 7PE Tel: 01723 506979
http://www.cogonis.com/

Established in 2010, CoGoni’s restaurant has outstanding reviews. Awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2011, all their food is made on site, including the pasta. As Italians, the owners and chef know how to make guests feel welcome, and it is this, along with their superb menu that keeps customers coming back. Serving a range of standard European dishes, including steaks, chicken and fish, you can add a fresh pasta course for an Italian touch, such as their Scarborough Crab Ravioli. Speciality sauces are freshly made on site to accompany your main course. The menu is not over fussy, just simple and beautifully prepared.

Walkers Fish Restaurant

17 Main Street, East Ayton, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO13 9HJ Tel: 01723 864259

No trip to the seaside would be complete without great fish and chips, and whilst the seafront fish bars play their part, sometimes a more refined experience is called for. Walkers is a family run restaurant, established in 1993, and lies about ten minutes drive outside of Scarborough town centre, in a pretty village called East Ayton. It serves traditional fish and seafood dishes of outstanding quality.

Diners note that nothing is too much trouble for the owner, who genuinely cares about her customers. The food is superb, whether you visit for a cup of tea and sandwiches during the day, or an evening meal.

Jeremy’s

This beautiful little restaurant is run by Jeremy and Anne Hollingsworth, and offers a ‘sophisticated but relaxed dining experience’. Visitors have rated it highly for ambience, charm and an imaginative menu. This is definitely a place to visit on a special night out, or just to enjoy a family Sunday Lunch. There is decking to the front of the restaurant, which provides a lovely spot to catch the last of the sun’s rays. Delightful.

La Lanterna Ristorante

33 Queen Street, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 1HQ Tel: 01723 363616
http://www.lanterna-ristorante.co.uk/

La Lanterna is an exceptionally fine Italian restaurant, which has been established for forty years. It is hugely popular with locals, which is always a good sign. It has an impressive menu, but the fish specials are particularly good, cooked by Chef-patron Giorgio Alessio, who brings northern Italian cuisine right into the heart of the Yorkshire Coast. Giorgio’s restaurant has featured in the ‘Which? Good Food Guide’ and the ‘Michelin’ guide.
