Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre was opened on Friday 23rd July with the opera event of the year starring Jose Carreras and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, joined by the Opera North Orchestra in an historical evening of music and spectacular firework display.
This magnificent opening event will be followed on 31st July by the ultimate 80’s Rewind Festival including amongst others pop legends Paul Young, Kid Creole & the Coconuts and Boy George. With over 70 top twenty hits between them, the line-up promises to be a fantastic party.
Details will soon follow on other major events to be staged at the Open Air Theatre throughout the summer; including plans for a July ‘World of Sport’ shown on huge LED screens including the World Cup, Wimbledon and F1 Racing.
The Open Air Theatre will be the catalyst for the resort’s continuing regeneration - it’s anticipated audiences for the 6,500 seater theatre are expected to have a major economic impact on the local economy by attracting significant visitors to Scarborough and encouraging people to extend their stay in the resort.
The investment is part of Scarborough Borough Council’s strategic development of The Sands scheme where innovative thinking and funding has facilitated the improvement of the resort’s infrastructure and enabled it to maintain its awarding winning status and to build on its reputation as a major holiday destination.
